ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book describes how the Friends of the Earth (FoE) groups are understood to be constituted by their activists and how Friends of the Earth International (FoEI) is the sum of all those activists. It discusses the activists back to their respective countries, where much of their joint work is carried out by means of communications technologies, primarily by telephone or email. The book argues that the entities that activists come up against in their FoE work are not only other people. At times activists feel that they are engaging a Leviathan, such as the EU, or the FoEI Secretariat, or other, apparently more powerful FoE groups. The book explores the ideals that FoEI claims to stand for, and consider whether these ideals are achieved in actual practice.
