Situational theories

Niccolo Machiavelli (1882), for example, noted that ‘whoever desires constant

success must change his conduct with the times’. This suggests that the dynamic

nature of the environment in which the leader operates plays a decisive role in

the leader’s success – and it is not (as previous theories would have us believe) a

function of simply the traits or skills of the leader that will ultimately cause the

leader to succeed or fail.
