ABSTRACT
Liberian history is unique for several reasons: the only place in Africa where freed African American slaves settled in an organized fashion, it was also the only colony established and controlled by an American public company, the American Colonization Society (ACS). And of course, it became the first black independent republic. It can additionally be argued that it is exceptional, at least within West Africa, with respect to the development of its domestic Christian-Muslim relationships.
