‘Don’t Treat us Like Dirt!’: The Fight Against the Co-incineration of Dangerous Industrial Waste in the Outskirts of Coimbra

Although the history of the treatment of industrial waste in Portugal is

now almost 20 years old, the choice of Souselas

(Coimbra) as a site for

the co-incineration of dangerous industrial waste only dates back to

December 1998. Since then, and until very recently, there has been a long

process of opposition and redefinition of the initial political strategies,

and it is this process which constitutes the particular ‘scenario’ of my

analysis. The struggle at Souselas drew together a vast and complex set of

issues which, as it grew, enabled a local protest movement, in its most

‘heated’ moments, to define the national agenda.
