ABSTRACT
This chapter examines how multi-disciplinary research can contribute to our understandingof literacy and development, focusing on the contribution of ethnographic studies anddevelopment economics. It argues that qualitative-quantitative collaboration is necessaryto resolve many of the outstanding challenges in literacy research, particularly in terms ofdeveloping models of the ‘causal’ processes and the mechanisms that inform theoreticalunderstanding and empirical research into instrumental benefits.
