ABSTRACT

Young people can suffer from a variety of problems including physical and emotional illness, accidents, disabilities, and developmental difficulties. The type of intervention program that is needed is usually reasonably clear. Disease can be prevented through vaccination or environmental changes to alter disease vectors. Emotional problems can be treated with psychotherapy and sometimes prevented with psychoeducational programs. Accidents can be reduced by environmental design and training. Access can be increased for the disabled, and youth with developmental difficulties can be educated and trained to optimize their potential. Certainly not all of the answers are known, but there is at least a sense that the forms that prevention should take are known and that progress is being made.
