By the mid-1980s, life expectancy of Americans neared 80 years for women and 72 for men. The number of Americans over 65 climbed to 26.8 million, or more than 11 percent of the total popu lation. By the year 2030, almost 20 percent of all Americans will be over the age of 65 (Schaefer, 1986).
