ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at countries outside United States control, continuing to contrast the official picture as presented to the public with Chomsky's alternative analysis and the record of internal planning by policy-makers. US intellectuals who are more liberally-minded concede that things are far from perfect in the US-led 'Free World', but argue that things are just as bad or even worse under communism. The chapter looks at the United States began a campaign of terrorism against Cuba. A key part of the official line is the claim that 'terrorists', either part of the communist conspiracy or just crazy fanatics, are engaged in a deadly campaign against civilized countries like the US. The chapter looks at three similarities between the US official line and the British one: the focus on 'terrorism', the assumption that the government is well-meaning and occasionally commits 'mistakes' but never 'crimes', and the myth of the huge propaganda machine used by the official enemy.
