ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts of the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of the book. The book presents a multifaceted and balanced portrayal of Macau Catholics by disclosing their world along the dimensions of religiosity and spirituality on the one hand, and morality and civility on the other. It acknowledges the "historical burden" of Macau Catholicism and hence its withdrawal from politics. The book also mentions that the World Youth Day furnished an occasion for Martin to meet young believers from other countries and thereby get in touch with the global trends of Catholicism. For civic-minded Catholics, without doubt the Church should be more outspoken on matters of social justice. But it also applied to some of the more conservative believers, who held that the Diocese should speak out on certain issues such as domestic violence, since they impinged as much upon social justice as family relationships.
