ABSTRACT

The departments of health serve as a link to the many acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)- related resources available within each state. Services provided vary from department to department. Several states have multiple offices to handle the various complex AIDS-related issues. In some instances, one office may handle all requests for public information and educational materials. A separate office may be in charge of epidemiological information or information that is more technical in nature. Most departments accept requests for information or materials and provide referrals to more appropriate agencies over the telephone. Many health departments operate hotlines and several employ personnel who will make presentations upon request. In addition to distributing AIDS-related information, some offices provide assistance to educators for classroom use. Many departments maintain directories of statewide services and some compile epidemiological reports for public use.
