Aoki’s model for the competition suggested little in the way of above-grade structure. The jury, which included Toyo Ito and Terunobu Fujimori, selected the proposal because it responded to the site in a way both audacious and remarkably sensitive, proposing a series of earthen trenches, looping and linear, incised into the large grassy park encompassing Aomori’s most important tourist attraction.
