ABSTRACT
Aoki’s model for the competition suggested little in the way of above-grade structure. The jury, which included Toyo Ito and Terunobu Fujimori, selected the proposal because it responded to the site in a way both audacious and remarkably sensitive, proposing a series of earthen trenches, looping and linear, incised into the large grassy park encompassing Aomori’s most important tourist attraction. These trenches deliberately echoed the adjacent archaeological dig,
the Sannai Maruyama Neolithic Remains.4 Galleries floated over the excavated areas, the mismatched upper and low regions meeting like loosely fitting dentures.
