ABSTRACT

In this chapter, Raymonde Sneddon revisits her enquiry of 1997 where she asked: what does it mean to a child to be bilingual? It is a question as relevant in primary schools now as it was then. Raymonde’s original enquiry set out to discover, through interviews and observations, the ways in which children and parents in 40 families used Gujerati, English and Urdu at home, in school, at the community centre, at the mosque, at work, shopping and at leisure.
