ABSTRACT

As with Chapter 22, this chapter exemplifies the power of mentoring. Ruth Wright, from the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, tells of a ten week music project in which primary children were supported by music college mentors. The project was based in Herbert Thompson Junior School which is located in an economically disadvantaged suburb to the west of Cardiff. With the personalised support of mentors, it enabled all children in one class to participate and also to establish a level of playing – with djembe hand drums, recorders, cellos, flutes and violins – that led to a performance at the Wales Millennium Centre.
