Histories of Middle Eastern women

The history of women in the twentieth-century Middle East can be written in more than one way. Many feminist historians have tried, but their attempts all seemed – to the writers themselves – incomplete and inadequate. Two of the leading experts on the subject concluded in 1999 that there is as yet no proper history of women in the Middle East.1
