ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book introduces a number of debates and controversies regarding the role of religion in education. It points the important interconnections between school and home spaces, particularly the potential values mismatch across the home school boundary. It points the socially cohesive nature of practices aimed at facilitating positive encounters between children of different backgrounds in two schools namely Rainbow Hill and Holy Cross. It reveals that both Rainbow Hill and Holy Cross alike emphasised the teaching of emotion work in order to promote positive relationships between different groups of pupils. Theories of citizenship have also been central to understanding the role of religion in the two case-study schools, whether regarding the citizenship philosophies and values promoted as part of whole school ethos. One of the major theoretical themes threaded throughout the book has been the concept of post-secularism.
