ABSTRACT

The conventional wisdom in music therapy has always upheld the importance of theory, identifying it along with research and clinical practice as one of three pillars of the discipline. The idea is that practice and research not guided by theory run the risk of being unsystematic and trivial, respectively. Clinical practice, which is not guided by theory, has no rationale for the procedures undertaken, and research unguided by theory has no means for ensuring its relevance to clinical applications.
