ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the unity of emotion and reason in xin, such that xin exists as a singular faculty in classical Chinese thought; the interdependence of emotion and reason in xin, in the sense that one exists in terms of the other; and that while emotion and reason are typically seen as opposed to each other in Western thought, in the Chinese concept of xin emotion and reason have a nonoppositional relationship. It not only addresses the unity of emotion and reason that recent Western scholarship has begun to treat, but it do so with reference to Chinese intellectual resources. The treatment of the Chinese concept of xin developed in the chapter provides a perspective on the relationship of emotion and reason that is neglected not only in conventional Western thinking, but also in areas of the revisionist literature that considers continuities between them. The Chinese concept xin in the chapter provides a focused treatment of major Chinese classical thinkers.
