ABSTRACT

In this chapter we discuss the limitations of Shannon and Weaver information theory (SWIT) for characterizing “mental information” and subjective notions of information. More importantly, we propose a new theory and measure of information based on the laws and principles of conceptual behavior proposed and derived in Chapter 6. Accordingly, the core constructs of our new information theory, named representational information theory (RIT; Vigo, 2011b, 2013a), are based on the contextual notions of structural complexity and categorical invariance first discussed in their embryonic form in Chapter 4; these stand in stark contrast to the probabilistic constructs underlying SWIT. The chapter concludes with a discussion of several experiments that corroborate RIT and its core measure.
