The Moroccan Argan case

In any case this arrangement between producers and suppliers is of relevance in the context of the new international ABS developments. Representatives of these companies have emphasised that they are dedicated to continued learning and improvement regarding this agreement, for the benefit of the Berber women involved (Barre, 26/7/2010; D’Erceville, 26/7/2010) – the ‘providers.’ Therefore this case presents a hypothetical of the sort of arrangements that would take place under the new internationally binding requirements under the Nagoya Protocol on ABS, once national systems have been established. It was in this context that the author first contacted Cognis (in 2010) to find out more about their CSR approach to argan products, in order to identify synergies between fair trade, sustainable use and ABS approaches for industry.
