ABSTRACT

It is 10:00 a.m. on a blustery March morning as the first graders begin their social studies lesson. “Right now we’re doing some traveling,” the teacher says, and the class calls out, “to China?” “to Ethiopia?” “to Africa!” A child whispers to a visitor, “We cooked chicken from Nigeria!” Two months later, the first grade has “traveled” all the way from China and Nigeria to Australia. They gather in a semicircle on the floor as their teacher reads a story that introduces some of the history of the Australian rain forest. As she reads, the bell rings, and several students sigh. A boy says, “I’d just like to stay and stay.”
