"Name of" and Metalinguistics
In teaehing "name of' we followed the basic steps illustrated earlier with "same-different." The word "apple" and an actual apple were set slightly apart and Sarah was given only one alternative, the piece of plastie intended to me an "name of." In plaeing the only available piece of plastie between the two slightly displaeed items, she produced astring that ean be read as "Apple name of object apple." This was the first positive instanee of "name of," just as the two cups given her earlier formed the first instanee of the predicate "same."
