INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES

Conflict and Actors The need for integrated land use strategies arises from the desire to minimise conflicts between countryside resource-using äctivities, and from the longerterm goal of enhancing socio-economic opportunities (see Chapter 5.4), optimising productivity and bequeathing an environmental estate for the benefit of future generations (see Chapter 4.1). Conflict in the countryside has been explored in Chapters 6 to 10, from which it is clear that there is a need to cater for harmonious interaction between the plethora of interest groups who make dif ferent demends on the countryside and the various functions which the countryside is obliged to cater for. Functional competition between different uses of the countryside arises from the various levels of compatibility between different resource-using äctivities (see FIGURE 12.1).
