ABSTRACT
Scrabble buffs take great delight in listing all the exceptions to the rule. The fact that there are arguably more words that break it than conform to it must give spelling reformists some encouragement. We ought to bear in mind, though, that there are good reasons for broken rules, and in terms of usefulness, the ‘i before e . . .’ rule has much to offer.
