ABSTRACT

This chapter starts with an overview and description of the characteristics, prevalence rates and subgroups of externalizing problems, including gender differences and different ages of onset. We then present research on the risk and protective factors associated with the development of aggression, delinquency and deviant behavior and how these are manifested and in some cases exacerbated in adolescence. The development of problem behavior is considered in light of the ecological-transactional perspective. The remaining part of the chapter is a presentation of evidence-based prevention and treatment programs for externalizing behavior problems.
