Sounding the image: between visuality and orality

In 1983, when Vilém Flusser's Towards α Philosophy 01 Photography was first published in German, digital photography had already been ‘invented' in Kodak's ‘electronic still camera' (patent sought 20 May 1977; patent issued 26 December 1978; see US Patent 4131919) but it was still some years away 企om realization on a mass scale and the camera phone was still more than 15 years away. Yet his speculations are remarkably prescient in their projection of a world in which the technical image predominates, opening up a different relation to time, history and memory than has appeared to operate in widely-held assumptions ofthe function and value ofphotography and its relation to memory.
