ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book defines characteristic of the contemporary media environment is the convergence of content, computing and communications. Media industries both old and new develop ways of exploiting the possibilities of this convergence. Social media are one kind of media industry built on those possibilities. Social media firms that have emerged to exploit the possibilities of convergence have tended to show less interest in creating content of their own. The discussion of internet memes shows how ideas can be moved from one context to another through social media, gaining interpretations, but perhaps losing something too in the process. As one become more literate and experienced in this media environment, he/she will develop coping strategies. These will be forms of social media literacy.
