ABSTRACT

This chapter describes some of these applications which are currently being studied or are in the early phases of implementation. These includes: biochar addition to soil as a part of a voluntary or state-backed carbon credit programme; and a sorbent material for removing contaminants and nutrients from water and gas. The Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) in Australia is a sub-programme under the National Carbon Offset programme which financially rewards Australian farmers for activities which enhance the sequestration of carbon in Australian farmlands. In the old Swedish animal husbandry it was common to let the cows and cattle graze in the nearby woods. The biochar-bentonite-compost-straw bedding enriched with animal manure and urine is a very suitable feedstock for composting. In conclusion, the use of biochar as a feed additive may provide interesting and economically feasible solutions to the increasingly complex problems of modern-day farming.
