ABSTRACT

Corps history Although a Provost-Marshal was featured in English armies of mediaeval times, it was not until 1661 that a Provost Service was created to ensure the discipline of English forces. An unnamed military police unit was created in 1855, and this became the Corps of Military Mounted Police in 1877, being complemented in 1885 by the Corps of Military Foot Police. The two corps were amalgamated in 1926 as the Corps of Military Police, which became the Corps of Royal Military Police during 1946.
