ABSTRACT

Corps history Up to 1797 regiments had their own civilian paymasters, but in that year commissioned paymasters were introduced, and in 1878 their functions were absorbed into the Army Pay Department when a centralized paymaster service was created. The officers of this department were aided by non-commissioned men who were in 1893 taken under the aegis of the Army Pay Corps. In 1919 a Corps of Military Accountants was formed to deal with the more complex matters of a vastly expanded army, but this was disbanded in 1925. Meanwhile, in 1920 the Army Pay Department and the Army Pay Corps were each granted the prefix 'Royal', and later in the same year were merged as the Royal Army Pay Corps.
