ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses anti-submarine missiles alongside full details of size, weight and operational range. They are: DDS Ikara; Latcore Malafon Mk 2; FRAS-1; SS-N-15; SS-N-16; Boeing/Gould ASW-SOW; Honeywell RUR-5A ASROC; Goodyear UUM-44A SUBROC. Ikara GWS 40: British version of the system with target data provided through the ship's Action Data Automation Weapons System. Branik: version for Brazil with a dedicated missile tracking and guidance system. SS-N-15: introduced in 1972, the SS-N-15 is believed to be based on the American SUBROC system and is similar in its concept and method of operation; the type is deployed aboard most Soviet nuclear attack submarines, and on the Tango class patrol submarine. ASROC(VL): updated version currently under development for service in the 1990s for vertical launch from the Mk 41 launcher unit able to accommodate ASROC, RGM-84 Harpoon and RIM-66/67 Standard missiles; the weapon is boosted vertically, aligned onto the correct trajectory, discards the booster and follows a ballistic trajectory to the impact area.
