ABSTRACT

We have described the evidence showing that cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) can reduce the impact hot fl ushes have on women’s day-to-day lives. It can also improve general wellbeing. So you may be left wondering how a psychological or ‘talking’ therapy can help us deal with hot fl ushes, which are physical symptoms. Furthermore, you may be asking if we are suggesting that there is a psychological cause for hot fl ushes and night sweats and that simply talking about them is enough to stop or get rid of them. This is not the case. Although CBT comes under the umbrella term of ‘talking therapies’, it is also a method of understanding the impact of psychological factors on these physical symptoms.
