LGBTQ Issues and California Schools
As one of the centers of LGBTQ culture and rights movements (Eaklor, 2008; Hirshman, 2012), California has been one of the most infl uential regions in framing LGBTQ issues. This is particularly true in relation to schools (Biegel, 2010; Cianciotto & Cahill, 2012; Miceli, 2005). This chapter mirrors the structure of the last chapter on Utah. I describe some important events that provide the cultural and political context in which the public school curriculum is embedded. The policies outside of schools provide a context for understanding how students and educators might include or exclude LGBTQ perspectives in the curriculum. Next, I include the insights of educators within the state that work toward LGBTQ inclusion.
