ABSTRACT

Michael Walzer’s mind is so many-sided that exploring his radicalism is a daunting task. In engaging with his work we can easily discover that he has already said what commentators want to say in response. He allows all sorts of ideas to go through his mind and often articulates them with a rare precision before turning on them. He tries to understand the thinking of others and why they think what they do. This quality makes his writing continuously instructive, even about ideas that he does not like. Yet he stands for an orientation which, though far from simple, is fairly distinct. The net impression his writings make on me is that he is undoubtedly a radical thinker, but that he is radical in different ways on different issues.
