Promoting equality and diversity
Despite the above observation, even President Obama has recently been under fi re in the USA for an apparent lack of diversity in his Cabinet. It was suggested that, despite the increasing emphasis on diversity within American society, Obama’s Cabinet did not refl ect the same emphasis – a now infamous photograph of the President with his senior advisors showed that, out of 11 advisors in the photograph, 10 were men, and 8 were white (Hall 2013 ). We could suggest that this paradox between the increasing diversity in society and that in the senior echelons of organizations, in this case the US government, is refl ected across the Western world. Specifi cally, it could be suggested that this is symptomatic of the failure in many cases of the diversity in society to be refl ected in organizations, particularly at senior levels.
