Corporate social responsibility

One of the characteristic features of the period since the economic downturn has been a public reaction and challenge to existing institutions. These include, originally, the regulators and the political institutions, and more recently companies, the press, and supra-national organizations such as the European Commission and the central banks. These pressures for scrutiny have come on the back of scandals, failures by the regulators, and failures in economic policy in many southern European countries, with attendant shocks in the Eurozone countries as a whole, as the scale of the fi nancial problems became apparent.
