ABSTRACT

On a delightful summer day, four of us sat enjoying a snack in an open gazebo within the Japanese gardens of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. After a while an Asian family consisting of a father, mother, child, and grandparents passed by. Their little daughter of about four years wandered near our table as she played and looked inquisitively at us. Her father was nearby and we asked him if we could share some of our food with his child and family. He smiled and graciously accepted our offer.
