ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 reviews research topics and findings in the area of phonological processing. An emphasis is placed on two areas: L1 influence and the controversy surrounding the role of age of acquisition. Research related to the following topics is reviewed: L1 transfer in different aspects of phonology, the role of L1-L2 overlap, L2 effect on L1, language interaction among simultaneous bilinguals, age-related differences and explanations, prospect of nativelikeness in L2 phonology. Research related to the role of other factors such as L2 experiences and proficiency, L1 use, segmental differences, and phonetic training is also discussed.
