ABSTRACT

In devising Cost Accounts the tendency on the part of many really clever accountants is to raise to themselves a monument of constructive skill as solidly linked or wedged together as Eddystone Lighthouse, and, having completed their masterpiece, they are apt to fall down and worship it, and look upon engineers as "no class" when they can see neither beauty nor utility in it. One of the most important financial books for our present purpose is the Purchase Journal, and its attendant satellite, the Sundries Analysis Journal. The Foundry columns are Departmental Stock Accounts, as also are the Smiths' Shop and Pattern Shop columns. The columns devoted to Engineering and Boiler Department purchases are kept for direct purchases only. It is a very important matter for accountants in devising a system of Cost Accounts to provide for a reliable arrangement governing the issue of goods ex store.
