A broad and basic category of video games, the action genre, contains many sub-genres. Sound for arcade games presented some challenges not usually found in modern console games. Although the genre of strategy games is broad and continually developing, there are significant distinctions among styles of gameplay. Leaving out board-based games such as chess, checkers, and backgammon, this genre offers two pairs of unique characteristics: real time or turn-based, and tactical or strategic. The audio design for each of these games will also be an individual, tailored approach to whatever recipe has been created. Creative audio design is an important part of what makes a good game.
