Introduction

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in this book. This book identifies strategic priorities that China may create, or specific strategic opportunities it may use as a great power dominant within its immediate region, but within, and with our global society. It exposes five myths of Chinese strategic culture and presents, from a historical analysis, five alternative points that have been central to the Chinese military experience. The book addresses the geographic imbalance of China's development. It identifies the changed domestic context of the construction of Chinese foreign policy. The book considers a related issue, which is the management of crises. It employs the discipline of global political economy and critical theory to consider relations between China and India. The book explains the menacing nexus of nuclear weapons, nuclear proliferation and terrorism, which arguably constitute the basis of relations between Pakistan, China and the US.
