ABSTRACT
The New Age or "Age of Aquarius" was embraced by many as a potential spiritual and religious renewal and re-enchantment of life in America. The principle virtue of the New Age is freedom, along with a conviction that unity is better than diversity, although new agers embraced religious pluralism. The Theosophical Society was also involved with the Indian National Congress, a political movement that played a major role in the drive for independence. Over the past two hundred years or more, America has given birth to numerous new religious movements. In 1909, the National Association for the Advancement for Colored People (NAACP) was founded amidst a rise of racial consciousness and conflict with a revival of the practice of lynching blacks to keep them in their socially inferior status. Another indigenous American denomination is the Jehovah's Witnesses, which is officially called the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society.
