ABSTRACT

A student asked: ‘What makes a leader?’ The teacher replied: ‘What determines the strength of a chariot wheel and enables it to carry its load?’ The student reflected and said: ‘Is it not the strength of the spokes?’ The Master replied: ‘Then why is it that wheels made of identical spokes differ in strength?’ The teacher continued: ‘A strong wheel is made not only of the spokes, but also of the spaces between them. Strong spokes badly placed make a poor wheel. Good conversation is not only in the quality of what is said, it is also in the silent spaces between the words.’
