ABSTRACT
In August 2010,1 spent two weeks in Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur, doing fieldwork for a study of Islam and the values of journalism at Tempo magazine (Indonesia) and the online news site Malaysiakini (Malaysia). As it was the month of Ramadan and I was talking with Muslim journalists at both news organizations about their faith, it seemed obvious that I too should fast, at least in a modified way.
