ABSTRACT

Henry Mordaunt, the second Earl of Peterborough, was commissioned captain-general of all the forces in Tangier on 6 September 1661, and with him went a sizeable garrison to occupy the small town in North Africa. Peterborough's own regiment of foot was raised from amongst the disbanded officers and men of the New Model, and numbered 1,000. Another regiment of the same size went directly from Dunkirk to Tangier under the command of Sir Robert Harley, as did two smaller regiments of 500 men each under Colonels John Fitzgerald and Lewis Farrell. A single troop of horse, commanded by Peterborough, accompanied the corps with a train of artillery and the requisite staff officers.
