ABSTRACT
Muslim scholars regard this sura and the following one as having for the most part been revealed in the year before the Hijra, except for a few verses which were revealed at Medina. This view is generally accepted, but some European scholars would place rather more verses in the Medinan period. The themes are suited to the situation of Muḥammad and the Muslims about the year 621.
