ABSTRACT
Some early Muslim authorities considered this the first sura to be revealed, presumably because ‘rise and warn’ (v. 2) is appropriate for the beginning of a ministry. The commoner view was that the first revelation was the beginning of 96; some then said that 74 followed, but after a gap in the revelations. There seems to be little connection between different sections of this sura, but it is mostly early Meccan.
