ABSTRACT

This order, which is an offshoot of the Khalwatiyya, was founded by Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Karlm as-Sammanl (1718-75). It was introduced into the Egyptian Sudan by Shaikh Ahmad at-Tayyib ibn al-Bashlr (d. 1823) and from there it was brought to the Jabarti on the Eritrean plateau by Shaikh Adam al-Kinanl who is buried in the Serai near 'Abi 'Addi. It has also some followers in south-western Ethiopia where it was introduced by a trader descendant of Shaikh Ahmad at-Tayyib called Sharif Husain as late as 1920. He died at Gondar where his tomb is visited. His son Muhammad is now khalifa in Jimma but he has not a strong following. T h e order also numbers some adherents among the Limmu Enarya.
