ABSTRACT

Sir Walter Scott’s familiarity with Augustan literature is signalised by his editions of Dryden (1808) and Swift (1814). The edition of Defoe’s novels, later including the ‘miscellaneous works’, put out from 1810 onwards by John Ballantyne, included some contributions by Scott. However, only a few of the notes are now attributed to him, and these are reproduced in excerpts (a) and (b). The long introduction is, however, his: the greater portion is reproduced in (c) below. Text from The Miscellaneous Works of Sir Walter Scott, Bart. (Edinburgh, 1834), vol. iv, pp. 248–81.
