William Gerhardie (b. 1895) was Russian born. He wrote the enthusiastic early appreciation of Chekhov, called ‘Anton Chekhov’, published in 1923. His works, particularly ‘Futility’ (1922), ‘The Polyglots’ (1925) and ‘Resurrection’ (1934), were enormously influential amongst younger writers. In 1940 he wrote a historical account of the Romanov dynasty.
