ABSTRACT

From Dukes's book ‘Modern Dramatists’, Frank Palmer, London, 1911.

Ashley Dukes (1885-1959) was well known both as dramatist and critic. His plays include ‘The Man with a Load of Mischief (1924) and ‘Matchmakers Arms’ (1930). In his section on Chekhov (pp. 190-210) he describes ‘The Seagull’ and ‘Three Sisters’ using as his basis a German translation. He calls both ‘tragedies of disillusionment’.
